bird houses, the new draft Alchemical Laboratory
The bird houses will be 10 small artificial nests made exclusively from reclaimed wood, following the principles of Laboratory Alchemy particularly sensitive ecology, environmental and recycled. The size will be about 20 x 20 x 20 cm, with a small hole opening to the entrance of the chicken. Each of the bird houses will be assigned to an artist who will paint, selecting color ranges, which, blending with the environment, will be welcoming to small birds. Given the feedback from the City of Milan, with the support of the Supervisor of animals Gianluca Comazzi, proceed to the homes within the city and attacked the trees, from 14 April 2010, which coincides with the beginning of the International Milan Furniture Fair. Distribute in the most populated city in that period (Tortona, Bovisa public offices) promotional material will be marked with the paper on which the stations affected installations.
Among the areas selected: Piazza Fontana, Piazza della Scala, Parco Sempione, Piazzale Cadorna, Piazza Sant'Eustorgio, Brera, Giardini di Porta Venezia, Tortona, Central Station, Piazzale Cemetery. Also in agreement with the Association Onlus LIPU, we would like to enter the nests within a path of Bird Watching.
We would like to fix the bird houses at about 2.50-3 m (visible but out of reach), placing them at the junction between trunk and branch preferably with string and wire to make them safe and stable.
We designed the installation as a permanent or leave the premises at least for one year.
We have proposed to the Museum of Natural History to exhibit in the building houses the works of art from day 1 to April 10, 2010, obtaining feedback from Mauro Mariani, Coordinator of the Pole of Science Museums in Milan.
"This is the true nature of home: the place of peace;
the shelter, not only from all injury,
but from all terror, doubt and division."
from Sesame and Lilies by John Ruskin
Modern cities are huge welcoming places. There is room for everyone: you live, work, socialize. An ideal place for consumers of services in step with the times. But the architecture of big cities do not always coincide with the practical and aesthetic needs of those who find themselves having to use directly, or the public. So too are the spaces of daily transit aseptic and often narrow. You feel increasingly removed from their city for a common good, and even less is perceived as a good individual, personal, of which occupy because it belongs to us protecting them with small gestures and attentions. In the opinion of the Franco Cecla, actually marginal as that of the squatters living in the favelas, or allow a relationship to space more personal and spontaneous, more direct.
The one spatial dimension on which we can actually intervene again, to personalize and affect our sign, and the interior of our house. The creative self-expression is confined in small single-family apartments. The home, in the big city, it becomes a precious place of intimacy that allows you to crop a personal dimension. E 'without doubt the place of excellence for protection, where we feel more at ease. Although the house is not a good thing for granted. There are conditions not always easy, as the students forced to share apartments and rooms with strangers, immigrants locked in tiny apartments, people who are unable to afford a holiday in danger of losing their homes and living on the streets ( 4,000 homeless only in Milan). In addition to all the realities of domestic unease, as the difficult relationships within families, which too often become real cases of domestic violence. So in many cases, the house takes on negative connotations, perceived as a place of discomfort, danger, choking. It comes natural to associate the feeling of estrangement from our environment, the conditions of hardship and difficulties they face every day lying city of small birds, like us, struggling with a city always on the run that has less and less space for its inhabitants.
The project began as a reflection of the bird houses on the concept of home in its multiple meanings. What we would like to create (for small houses birds of the city painted by contemporary artists who work in Milan) refer to the idea of \u200b\u200bhome as a manifestation of individual creativity and a place of refuge from the snares of the world, urging a broad reflection on the need for a housing that takes public and private account the views of citizens / residents and a reflection on the level of protection for family members of each company, and residential housing, where too often wear uncomfortable reality that remain in the dark. Thus, by giving a home to many small birds that live in our city. Everyone deserves its place of peace, as defined by Ruskin.
